Sighisoara is the Romanian town that most oozes the misty, wooded, and very spooky vibe that you probably access when you think of Transylvania. Founded by 12th century Saxons, Sighisoara is fantastically well preserved, and a night walk with stray dogs prowling the ancient graveyard at the top of the long covered stairway will make you wonder if you should run, perhaps down the empty cobbled streets to the comfort of a pub in the town center. Romania is gritty, but the payoff can be substantial if you are up for a bit of adventure.
