Woman Killed In South End Apartment Fire

BOSTON (CBS) – A woman died early Saturday morning after an apartment fire in the South End of Boston.

Firefighters responded to a 5-story East Canton Street apartment building just after 6 a.m.

The building has 20 units, but flames were contained to a third floor apartment. The blaze is believed to have started in the third-floor apartment's bathroom, where a woman was found dead.

The woman's husband and daughter were hurt and rushed to a local hospital. The extent of their injuries and condition is unknown.

A neighbor told WBZ NewsRadio 1030's Kim Tunnicliffe the husband tried to go back into the burning apartment to save his wife but was held back by the flames. She says he was screaming for help, adding that his forehead appeared to be burnt.

The witness says she bumped into the victim in the elevator Friday night as she was coming home from her job as a nurse. She described the woman as being nice and charming.

The fire is being investigated by the Boston Fire Department, Boston Police Department, and the Suffolk County District Attorney's office.

In total, the fire caused about $100,000 in damage.

Investigators have not yet said what caused the fire.
