Record Warmth Within Reach

The coveted 70 degrees….an unofficial rite of passage into the Spring season.  And while we're still 13 days away from the Vernal Equinox (astronomical start to Spring), we'll be basking in sun and potential record setting warmth come midweek.

Our average highs are in the lower 40s for this time of year, but we'll be well above that for several days in a row.  Despite clouds winning out today, a gusty southwest wind ahead of a front in northern New England will boost our temperatures to around 50 this afternoon. I can't rule out an isolated shower or two in northern MA and southern NH, but most of us will be dry. Our friends in the North Country actually pick up a few inches of snow by the time the afternoon is done.

2015 Snow Forecast Cam Move (1)

Forecast Snowfall Today; 1-3" in parts of Northern New England

Tomorrow we get a bit milder…except along the immediate coast.  This time of year we tend to use "sea breeze", "backdoor front" and "cool onshore flow" more frequently – for good reason.  Keep in mind our ocean temperatures haven't warmed up much yet.  The Boston Harbor buoy is registering a water temp of 40 right now.  So any wind coming in off the water will result in cooler conditions right at our shoreline.  Inland communities will climb 55 to 60 tomorrow, but we'll be stuck in the 40s at the coast.

Tuesday night a warm front pushes through New England, accompanied by a few rain showers. Behind it, temperatures more typical of June 1st will move in Wednesday.  It'll be a close call but record highs are certainly within reach.

2015 D2 Highs Local (3)

As is typical this time of year, southeast MA will be cooler with a southwest wind Wednesday.

We cool off a bit heading into the end of the week with the next chance of wet weather heading our way on Thursday. Expect clouds to increase and areas of rain to arrive late in the day, perhaps lingering into early Friday morning.  After that, high pressure temporarily builds into the Northeast US before the next round of showers is likely to arrive late in the weekend. We'll keep an eye on the timing for you.
