Bergeron's Late Goal Lifts Bruins Over Flames 2-1

BOSTON -- Cashing in on a late too-many-men-on-the-ice penalty on Calgary, the Boston Bruins got a power-play goal from center Patrice Bergeron and edged the Flames 2-1 Tuesday night.

Bergeron took a pass from fellow center Ryan Spooner and sent a 40-footer past goaltender Joni Ortio with 3:24 left for Boston's first power-play goal in five games. The Bruins were in an 0-for-13 slump with the man advantage, and they recorded only their fifth goal in 56 power plays over the past 16 games.

The goal was the 24th of the season and the 230th of Bergeron's career, moving him into a tie with Don Marcotte for 10th place on the team's all-time list.

Calgary defenseman Jakub Nakladal scored his first NHL goal earlier in the period, and the Flames kept it tied until clearly having six players on the ice, leading to Bergeron's goal.

The Bruins (35-23-6) moved past the idle Detroit Red Wings into third place in the Atlantic Division and raised their dismal home record to 14-16-3.

Adam Jones' Plus/Minus From Win:

The Flames (26-33-4) fell to 1-8-1 in their past 10 games. They are the third-worst team in the NHL with 56 points. Ortio, who played well, making 23 saves, dropped to 0-6-2 on the season.

Right winger Landon Ferraro also scored for the Bruins, who got 24 saves from Tuukka Rask in the victory.

Boston defenseman Torey Krug got the puck from right winger Brett Connolly and sent it to Ferraro, whose wrist shot from the slot beat Ortio 7:05 into the game. It was Ferraro's second goal in four games after he went 29 without one.

The Bruins' lead held up until 5:35 of the third period. Center Mikael Backlund had the puck behind Rask with an open net but slide the puck through the crease. He also knocked Rask's stick out of his hand, though the goalie had his stick back but wasn't fully settled when Nakladal's blast beat him. The pass to Nakladal came from defense partner Jyrki Jokipakka, playing his first game for the Flames after coming over from the Dallas Stars.

Dave Goucher, Bob Beers On New Guys:
