Students Call On Barnstable High School To Cancel 'American Pie' Singer's Concert

BARNSTABLE (CBS/AP) – Some students are calling on Barnstable High School to cancel an upcoming Don McLean concert over the "American Pie" singer's domestic violence case in Maine.

The Cape Cod Times reports that a group of students in the Mentors in Violence Prevention programs at several Cape schools have sent a letter to the Barnstable superintendent, asking to stop the April performance.

"We believe Mr. McLean is a bad role model," students wrote. "We believe payment to Mr. McLean for his entertainment enables him to continue a lifestyle we do not agree with."

McLean has pleaded not guilty to six charges, including domestic violence assault, following his arrest on Jan. 18.

The singer said in a statement Monday that the case is "a tragedy for our family and especially my wife."

McLean's wife filed a handwritten request for protection after the January arrest. The couple later announced that the protection order was dismissed.

The Barnstable interim superintendent told The Cape Cod Times that he's taking with McLean's management company to figure out if the concert should still happen.
