Next 24 Hours: Accumulating Snow, Heavy Rain, Damaging Gusts & 50s

BOSTON (CBS) -- Yesterday we shattered numerous records and bottomed out at -16 in Worcester and -9 in Boston. . . the coldest temperatures we've seen in 59 years! And now we're talking 50s for highs tomorrow.  What a wild turn around. Obviously there has to be some sort of transition between the two extremes. That transition comes later on today.

Snow:

As the surge of warm approaches from the south, areas of snow will break out between 4-8 p.m. across southern New England. Because we've been so cold, the snow will have no problem sticking, making the roads slick as a result, especially by the tail end of the ride home. Accumulations will be minor, generally a coating to an inch, with a greater risk of 1-3" along & outside of 495. Snow will transition to a wintry mix then eventually rain between 9 p.m. and 1 a.m. from south to north.

Rain:

In terms of rain, expect scattered showers from time to time with a band of heavy rain pushing through between 4-8 p.m. Tuesday. There may even be some rumbles of thunder in there too. Rainfall totals will top out between 0.5" and 1.5". . . localized urban and poor drainage flooding will result.

Wind:

Pockets of wind damage will be possible late in the day tomorrow as the south-southeast wind increases. Gusts to 50 mph are likely in eastern Mass., with some isolated gusts to 60 possible in some of the strongest downpours that come through tomorrow evening.

Warmth:

By sunrise tomorrow, temperatures will be 40 to 50 degrees warmer than this morning. Remarkable! Fog is likely in the morning too – so watch for some reduced visibility during your drive to work. We jump into the 50s Tuesday afternoon. The record to beat in Boston is 60, so we won't quite get there. We'll be in the 40s on Wednesday before turning more seasonal again for the end of the week. No more arctic air in sight for now.
