Methuen Clerk Uses Golf Club To Fight Off Armed Robber

METHUEN (CBS) – A store clerk fought off an armed robber in a wild struggle that was caught on surveillance video.

A man walked into the Stop Quick convenience store on Haverhill Street Wednesday just after 4 p.m., showed a knife and demanded money from the clerk.

The clerk walked away, grabbed a golf club, and started swinging at the man, who ripped the cash register off the counter and tried to get out the front door.

But the clerk had locked it.

The robber panicked and started smashing the glass door with the cash register as the clerk whacked him again with the club.

The man grabbed the clerk's head, shoved him away and then dove out the bottom of the shattered door.

Once outside, police said he jumped into a waiting blue SUV, possibly a Jeep, and took off down Cypress Avenue towards Lawrence.

He left the knife behind.

The suspect is white, about 35 years old, 6-foot 4-inches tall, and weighs about 250 pounds.

He was wearing a grey sweatshirt and grey sweatpants and may have cuts from pushing through the glass door.

Anyone with information should call Methuen Police at 978-983-8698 or 978-983-8783.
