Two Arrested, Children Removed From 'Deplorable' Worcester Apartment

WORCESTER (CBS) – Three children were taken from a Worcester apartment with living descriptions described as "deplorable" after police arrested two women on drug charges.

Worcester Police served a search warrant in a King Street apartment, looking to arrest Sheyla Montalvo, 24, and 29-year-old Natasha Riley-Murphy.

When police entered the apartment they found three children inside who are three, five and six years old.

Nearly all the floors in the apartment were covered in animal feces, police say. In addition, the children's bedroom had mice feces throughout.

Officers could hear mice above their heads in the drop ceiling. While police were inside, they say a cat came out from under the sink with a live mouse in its mouth.

During their search of the apartment, police found a backpack with 99 oxycodone pills and $3,382 in cash. There were also two bags of marijuana and three cell phones in the backpack.

While searching Riley-Murphy, police also found a bag of cocaine.

Case workers from the Department of Children and Families arrived at the apartment and took custody of all three children.

Two of the children were Montalvo's and the third is one of her relatives who was visiting.

Montalvo was arrested and charged with trafficking a Class B substance, drug violation within 100 feet of a park and conspiracy to violate the controlled substance act.

Riley-Murphy was also arrested on the same charges. In addition, she is charged with possession of a Class B substance and possession of a Class B substance with intent to distribute, second or subsequent offense.

Both women are expected to be arraigned on Monday in Worcester Country District Court.
