State Police Identify Victim In Peabody Murder-Suicide

PEABODY (CBS) -- Massachusetts State Police have identified the victim of a murder-suicide that took place in Peabody Tuesday night.

Elisete Benevides, 51, the sole resident of the Winter Street home, and Gelcino Souza Oliveira, 50, of Beverly, were found dead on the home's side porch. Both suffered from knife wounds, and police said Oliveira's were self-inflicted.

State Police said Benevides and Oliveira were in a relationship that Benevides ended in October. Police said there were no restraining orders or previous reports of violence between the two.

Peabody Police said Benevides' son-in-law called 911, saying that Benevides' sister in Brazil had been speaking on the phone with Benevides shortly before 6:30 p.m. when Benevides screamed suddenly and the call ended.

Jim Calas, Benevides' landlord, says he is "stunned" at the news. He called her a "nice lady" and the incident a "tragedy all around."

Police officers found both dead on the porch leading from the driveway into the home.

Benevides, a native of Brazil, had lived in Massachusetts for several years and was a hard-working home cleaner.

State Police say the incident was still under investigation.
