Methuen High School Evacuated After Anonymous Email Threat

METHUEN (CBS) -- Police are investigating an email threat that caused an evacuation at Methuen High School Wednesday morning.

School officials received the anonymous email, which made a non-specific threat against the school, at 9:30 a.m. The school was evacuated, and police conducted a full investigation and search of the building along with a State Police K-9 unit.

Methuen Police said there are no indications of danger to students, faculty, or staff, and that they had not found anything dangerous at the school.

The scare comes one day after schools in fifteen Massachusetts communities received anonymous phone threats, and in the same week as another round of threats to area schools, both of which caused evacuations and frustration.

"We are aware that there have been a number of threats made against Massachusetts high schools in the past two weeks, but we want the community to know and understand that they have no bearing on our response and investigation today," Methuen Police Chief Joseph Solomon said. "We take every report very seriously, and will conduct a thorough investigation."

Methuen Public Schools will decide whether or not to resume the school day after the building is cleared.

Police will speak to press about the threats and evacuation at 2 p.m. Wednesday.
