MIT Student's Project Captures 1 Million Images Of Boston Skyline

BOSTON (CBS) -- The Boston skyline is a favorite subject of local photographers, but few can say they've taken more pictures of it than Adrian Dalca.

Dalca is an MIT grad student, who has spent the past five years capturing about a million images of the city skyline from his residence on campus.

"What started as a few pictures taken from our apartment window led to a very exciting photography and research project," Dalca writes on the website for The Boston Timescape Project.

Every image is taken from about 55 meters high, using several different cameras, Dalca says.

The collection includes some extraordinary weather pictures taken from time lapses, including thunderstorms, double rainbows, gorgeous sunsets and the frozen Charles River.

He's also captured newsworthy events in his pictures, like the 2012 transistor fire that left thousands without power in the Back Bay.

Dalca writes that he hopes others can use the data for interesting research problems and wonders if the temperature can be predicted based on an image of Boston.
