Authorities say 24-year-old Amar Miletic of Saugus was arraigned Monday in Malden District Court on a charge of leaving the scene of a motor vehicle crash causing personal injury and death.
The Dec. 27 crash on Pleasant Street killed Yaai Chen just a short distance from her home at the Malden Housing Authority's senior housing complex.
Chen was struck near Pleasant Street's intersection with Vista Street, a particularly treacherous stretch for pedestrians crossing the street.
Police say neighbors were able to provide a description of the vehicle as it fled the scene.
A judge ordered bail set at $10,000 with the condition that Miletic doesn't drive.
A hearing is scheduled for March 2.
