Keller @ Large: New Hampshire Voters Sending Mixed Messages
BOSTON (CBS) -- If New Hampshire voters seem intent on maximizing their 15-months of fame every presidential election cycle, it's no wonder.
They want to make the most of this exception to the usual national indifference.
And in classic flinty, opaque New England style, New Hampshire is sending some very mixed messages.
Check out the brand-new CBS News poll. Donald Trump remains comfortably in the lead with more than double the support of each of his closest competitors, Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio, three times the numbers of Chris Christie.
But only a third of them say yep, they've made their minds up for keeps.
And when asked to match candidates with descriptions, they rate Rubio and Cruz more electable than Trump, and all three of the also-rans more prepared to be president than the frontrunner. Trump is rated the most "effective" of the four.
Let's pause to reflect on this.
They are choosing a potential president who they hope will win next November. But the person they find least prepared and less electable has the inside track.
The poll shows the two Southern candidates, Cruz and Rubio, trail the the two Northeasterners in the category "someone I can relate to," so maybe there's a clue there.
Come to think of it, Trump is the closest to a Patriots fan in the bunch.
And that weave he has going is reminiscent of the dunes on the Cape.
Anyway, New Hampshire, we can't make head or tail of what you're thinking.
But rest assured, we can't wait to find out.
