Quincy Police Seek Help To ID Hit-And-Run Driver

QUINCY (CBS) -- Authorities are asking the public to help them identify the driver who struck and fatally injured a woman earlier this month.

Akiu Ngo, 78, was hit near the intersection of the Burgin Parkway and Dimmock Street, not far from her home, around 4:43 p.m. on December 3. She died a few days later. Police released her RMV photo Monday.

Quincy Police Chief Paul Keenan said descriptions of the suspect and his vehicle remain vague, but that he is believed to be a white male with gray hair in his 40s or 50s, who was wearing khaki pants, a plaid shirt, and a black jacket, and driving a black, boxy-type station wagon that may have been a Volvo.

"If anybody was in the area at the time, or has any information concerning this accident, we'd like to bring it to a closure," said Keenan.

Police believe that, since the victim was wearing puffy winter clothing, damage to the vehicle would be minor.

Norfolk District Attorney Michael Morrissey said that, in particular, they are asking body shop owners in the Quincy and South Shore areas, as well as eastern Massachusetts and parts of Rhode Island, New Hampshire, and Maine who have seen a car of that description with minor damage to get in touch with them.

Morrissey thanked the bystanders who rushed to give aid to Ngo at the scene, but said it was the confusion that resulted that allowed the person who caused the crash to leave the scene somewhat unnoticed.

"No one wants to lose a loved one in an auto accident," said Morrissey. "We have a high number of people that we lose in Norfolk County, one a week, and we do a pretty good job of identifying the individuals responsible."

Authorities did an exhaustive search for surveillance video from MBTA buses and stations as well as stores in the area, but are looking to talk to private individuals who might have video of the area from around the time of the accident.

Keenan urged anyone with information to contact Quincy Police at 617-479-1212.
