Teen Shot Near O'Bryant School In Roxbury

ROXBURY (CBS) - A teenager was shot near a school in Roxbury Monday afternoon.

A Boston Police spokesman told WBZ-TV the teen was shot in Roxbury Heritage State Park across the street from the John D. O'Bryant School of Mathematics and Science on Malcolm X Boulevard shortly after noon.

Police said the teen's injuries are not life-threatening.  He is not a student at O'Bryant, but he does attend another school in the city, according to authorities.

Student Serena Watler says she had met the 16-year-old victim a few times.

"From what I've seen, he seemed like a very good kid. Very genuine, very nice kid," she said.

A student told WBZ-TV's Bill Shields a teacher in the hallway told her class to close the windows and "at that point we were mad scared because we thought that they were in the building."

When the shot was fired, teachers at Madison Park Technical Vocational High School immediately went into lockdown mode.

"We have kids who persevere and they have grit," says Kevin McCaskill, executive director at Madison Park. "And I think it was to the point where something had occurred and they followed the proper protocol and procedures. When it was all said and done, we went back to business as usual."

There have been no arrests.

No other information is available at this point in the investigation.

The O'Bryant School was once known as Boston Technical High School.
