Driver Leaves Path Of Destruction In Worcester Neighborhood

WORCESTER (CBS) – A driver was taken into police custody after a wild ride through part of Worcester Thursday morning.

A man driving a Ram 1500 pickup truck hit a fire hydrant and several cars near East Mountain Street around 9:30 a.m.

Police say he had tossed a couple of whiskey bottles out of his truck before driving away.

But he didn't get very far.

He veered the pickup onto Mountainshire Drive, through a fence, into a yard, then into shrubs and before finally crashing into a tree.

The driver then tried to back up and maneuver the pickup truck to get away.

When that didn't work, witnesses say he got out and looked at the damage, which was extensive.

Residents told WBZ-TV's Ken MacLeod he then groaned, grunted and waved his hands at the damage before he began pounding his face against the mangled truck. That opened up a cut on his face.

Witness Kay Cahn said she heard a loud bang outside her home.

"(I) looked out the window, the truck was on the other side of our driveway.  He backed, bammed into the tree.  I was concerned about him," she told MacLeod.

The man, who has not yet been identified, was taken to the hospital.

Police have not said yet what charges he will face.

No other information is available at this point in the investigation.
