New PMC Indoor Cycling Fundraiser Aims To Raise $1 Million

By Bree Sison, WBZ-TV

BOSTON (CBS) – The Pan-Mass Challenge is adding an event to next year's calendar and reaching out to the next generation of cycling enthusiasts.

The first weekend in January, The Resolution by PMC aims to raise $1 million for Dana Farber Cancer Institute with an indoor bike-a-thon.

"If everybody just commits for one hour, we can raise a million bucks in a day," event host George Foreman III told WBZ-TV. "In many ways, that's unheard of. Especially doing something that people consider fun."

Foreman owns The Club by George Foreman III in South Boston where The Resolution will welcome 2,000 riders committed to cycling for one hour each.

Every summer, the traditional Pan-Mass Challenge weekend supports about 6,000 riders biking up to 192 miles across the state.

It raises more money for charity than any other single athletic fundraising event in the country.  Since its founding in 1980, PMC has raised $455 million for adult and pediatric cancer care and research at Dana Farber.

"For The Resolution, I'm excited because we get a chance to show people how much can be done if everybody commits to doing their part," Foreman said.

Group fitness fans, like 25-year-old Elena Gulotta, are signing up for The Resolution to honor loved ones affected by cancer in a way that feels natural.

"It was kind of a no-brainer. It's a perfect weekend to kick off New Year's resolutions and also help the cause," said Gulotta, whose grandfather and uncle both died from cancer.  Her aunt and a close friend also inspire her to raise money for Dana Farber.

"It's a disease that affects way too many people so I'm riding for everyone," Gulotta said. "This is a great way to get younger people involved.  I know I would love to work up to doing the PMC but I think for now The Resolution is kind of a great stepping stone."
