Celtics Cut Three Players, But More Roster Trimming Coming

BOSTON (CBS) -- The Boston Celtics cut three players on Tuesday, but that is just the start of the roster trimming that will come over the next week.

The C's waived guard Levi Randolph and forwards Coty Clarke and Malcolm Miller on Tuesday, cutting their roster to 17. With back-to-back games to close out their preseason slate, camp invitee Corey Walden will remain on the roster for now but is expected to be cut following Friday's game against the Philadelphia 76ers.

The hope is that all four players will eventually land with Boston's Development League affiliate in Maine.

But just waiving Walden won't be enough for Boston to reach 15 guaranteed contracts. Danny Ainge will have to trim one more player off the roster before the regular season begins, and at the moment, it looks like Perry Jones III will be the odd man out if the team can't pull off some kind of trade.

Ainge acquired Jones in the offseason for a second-round from the Oklahoma City Thunder, receiving cash and a second rounder as security in case Jones doesn't make the roster. The 6-11 forward has played sparingly this preseason, logging just 23 minutes in three games.

Boston closes out the preseason against the New York Knicks at the TD Garden on Thursday and Philadelphia 76ers at the Verizon Center in Manchester, New Hampshire. They open the 2015-16 season next Wednesday against Philadelphia in Boston.
