Fired Brookline Teacher Will Be Allowed To Return To Class

BROOKLINE (CBS) – A teacher who was fired for swearing in front of students will not lose his job after all.

School officials in Brookline say Larry Chen will be allowed to return to Brookline Middle School on November 5.

Chen received a notice of termination from outgoing School Superintendent William Lupini after using a curse word after school. Many students and parents were outraged that their beloved teacher was fired, and disrupted a school committee meeting earlier this month.

Chen thanked the students and parents of Brookline for their support, and pledged to work twice as hard to "justify their faith" in him.

"I am excitedly looking forward to my return to the classroom, and the chance to be back with my awesome students - I guess this proves that the kids were awake during their lessons on the democratic process and the role of citizens in shaping their community," Chen said in a statement Tuesday night. "I could not be more proud of the way they brought what they learned into practice."

Chen will have to take part in a professional development program before he returns to the classroom.
