Pennsylvania Amber Alert Suspect Arrested In Boston

BOSTON (CBS) – A woman who police say fled Pennsylvania with her infant son was arrested overnight in Boston.

An Amber Alert was issued around 1 a.m. Saturday morning after 36-year-old Tiffany Cherry fled Pennsylvania Friday afternoon with her seriously ill son.

Police said Cherry ignored directions to get the boy to the hospital for emergency medical care. She fled in a gray 2004 Dodge Intrepid with New Hampshire plates.

Officers developed information that Cherry may have been in the Waltham area and activated the Amber Alert for Massachusetts.

About two hours after the alert was issued, Cherry was taken into custody by Boston Police.

According to State Police, the woman took her son to Boston Children's Hospital for treatment.

Having just received the Amber Alert, a nurse recognized the boy she had just checked into the hospital and called police.

Boston Police told WBZ-TV the woman was told to bring her son to the hospital in Pennsylvania for treatment, but she wanted to come to Boston for the best care.

Cherry had three warrants out for her arrest in Massachusetts, one on motor vehicle charges and two for prostitution, leading Boston Police to arrest her.

She now also faces two charges in Pittston, Penn., for ignoring a doctor's orders to take the child to the nearest trauma center.

A Department of Children and Families spokesman said the child is now in their custody.

"The Department is investigating the incident with law enforcement and as DCF officials look into the matter, custody of the child has been transferred to DCF," the DCF spokesman said.

Cherry is expected to be arraigned Monday in Roxbury Municipal Court on fugitive from justice warrants out of Pennsylvania.
