Boston Children's Hospital Surgeons Perform Brain Surgery On Baby
BOSTON (CBS) -- Two-month-old Abigail Jones' journey into this world has not been easy.
Before birth, doctors in Florida diagnosed her with Down's syndrome and an inoperable brain tumor.
"We didn't know how long she would live or even (if she would) make it out of the hospital," Abigail's dad Stephen Jones said. The Jones, who live in Florida, actually made funeral arrangements for Abigail.
Abigail's mom, Erika Jones, who is also a neurological nurse, says her doctors told the family there was nothing they could do.
"The doctors prepared us for every scenario, but they never prepared us that she would live," Erika said.
After baby Abigail was given a death sentence, the family took her home for where they thought she would eventually die. Then they noticed the baby wasn't getting any worse, so they got a second opinion at Boston Children's Hospital.
"We didn't think there was enough evidence to give (the) baby a death sentence based on some pictures and we operated and removed the mass," Dr. Alan Cohen, neurosurgeon-in-chief at Boston Children's Hospital, told WBZ-TV.
Cohen says the tumor was not malignant and that Abigail will live.
"She is a miracle! She is missing a large bit of her left brain and she should have deficits and not be a normal baby, but she is," Erika said.
The family says although Abigail still has Down's syndrome, they believe she will live a long life.
"God works miracles through his hands and doctors," Stephen said. "We prayed for her to be healed and however that works out, God gets the glory for it."
