Norton Barber Shop Taking Heat For 'Black Labs Matter' Sign

NORTON (CBS) -- A sign posted outside a barber shop in Norton is drawing criticism from some, including members within the Black Lives Matter movement.

The sign, which reads "Black Labs Matter," is meant to solicit financial support for black dogs, which anecdotally are adopted less often than canines of any other color, owner Tom Stevens said.

Stevens told WBZ NewsRadio 1030 he doesn't want to get into the race discussion that was sparked by the Black Lives Matter movement.

"People get all offended about it, but again, what's in your heart is in your heart, you've got to live with that, I don't," he said. "It's extra baggage you carry, it's not what I carry."

He's received dozens of voicemail messages in support of the sign, one of which said: "For all the people who don't get the sense of humor, that's too bad on them. Just know that I'm laughing with you."

Stevens said he'll match up to $500 any checks made out to the MSPCA and dropped off at his West Main Street shop.
