David Ortiz Named AL Player Of The Week
BOSTON (CBS) -- After joining the 500 home run club over the weekend, David Ortiz has another accolade to add to his collection.
The Red Sox' slugger was named the American League Player of the Week on Monday after hitting .444 with three home runs and nine RBIs in five games last week. The Red Sox went 3-2 in that stretch, with Ortiz collecting at least one hit in all but one of those contests. His 1.111 slugging percentage in that five-game span led all hitters in the Majors.
Ortiz went 3-for-4 in Boston's 10-4 win over the Rays on Saturday night blasting a pair of home runs, including the 500th of his career. Ortiz is just the 27th player in MLB history to join the 500 home run club, and just the second Red Sox player to reach the milestone.
This is Ortiz's sixth career Player of the Week honor, and his first since June 2011.
In 130 games this season, the 39-year-old Ortiz is hitting .275 and leads the Red Sox with 34 home runs and 95 RBIs.
