Tree Falls On State Police Cruiser Outside Gov. Baker's House

SWAMPSCOTT (CBS) – A State Police trooper escaped injury when a large tree branch fell on a parked cruiser outside Governor Charlie Baker's house Friday night.

Trooper Robert Sundberg was in the SUV on a security detail when the branch fell at about 8:30 p.m.

"All of a sudden I heard a loud bang," Trooper Sundberg said. "Once I heard the bang and realized what was going on I tried to move out of the way because the cruiser was directly under it but it just caught the back end of the cruiser."

The branch shattered the rear window of the cruiser and dented its roof.

The governor was at a fundraiser in Gloucester at the time.

"As I was getting into the car to leave, my phone buzzed and it was someone letting me know a tree had fallen outside our house and my first question was 'did anybody get hurt? and the answer was no which was great," Gov. Baker said.

The tree from which the branch fell was located between the street and sidewalk on town property. The road was closed while town DPW workers removed the branch.
