The Progression Of Jimmy Garoppolo
BOSTON (CBS) -- Tom Brady got the start in New England's preseason opener on Thursday night, but when No. 12's two series were over it was time for Jimmy Garoppolo to take over.
There were ups and downs from the second-year quarterback, who went 20-for-30 for 159 yards and an interception in New England's loss to the Green Bay Packers.
WBZ-TV's Dan Roche, the television voice of the Pats during the preseason, joined 98.5 The Sports Hub's Toucher & Rich on Monday to discuss the progress of Garoppolo. With a makeshift offensive line, Roche said Thursday night wasn't perfect for Garoppolo, but a step in the right direction.
"He was inconsistent, but I thought he looked better at practice on Saturday which was encouraging," said Roche. "There are things he certainly needs to work on. Once he stopped throwing to Josh Boyce [Thursday night] and threw to [Chris] Harper and other guys he looked OK. He showed progress and that's what you hope for, just continued progress."
Roche pointed out that Garoppolo had some trouble throwing outside, but his throws inside were very accurate.
"Bill [Belichick] said it best in our production meeting Wednesday. He said Jimmy has taken the next step in the sense of he does everything well getting the play in, the play called and getting up to the line. Now that he's better at those things it's a matter of making the proper read, making the proper decision and making the proper throw. He's making progress."
"You just have to be patient with him," added Roche.
