Report: Patriots Release QB Matt Flynn, Will Sign Ryan Lindley

BOSTON (CBS) -- With their first preseason game just a few days away, the Patriots have released quarterback Matt Flynn.

ESPN's Diani Russini first reported the news, noting that Flynn "had a pulled hamstring before camp and it never healed."

Patriots head coach Bill Belichick revealed at his press conference on Monday afternoon that Flynn never passed his physical while with the Patriots.

"We don't have forever here. The train is moving," said Belichick. "I know he worked hard and it was frustrating that he couldn't get out there and we couldn't see him out there. That's the way it was."

Flynn, 30, entered camp on the non-football injury list. In his career, he's started seven games and played in 53 total, completing 61.3 percent of his 357 pass attempts for 2,541 yards, 17 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. Last season with Green Bay, he threw just 16 passes, but in 2013, he went 124-for-200 for 1,392 yards, eight touchdowns and five interceptions for Oakland and Green Bay.

Shortly after news of Flynn's release broke, ESPN's Field Yates reported that the Patriots will sign Ryan Lindley.

Lindley, 26, has completed 50.8 percent of his 264 career pass attempts. He's thrown two touchdowns and 11 interceptions, and he went 16-for-28 for just 82 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions for the Cardinals in last year's postseason.
