Boston Doctor Raises Money For Charity Through Street Dancing

BOSTON (CBS) -- "It's a mix of popping, crump and hip-hop," says Dr. Adnan Khera, describing his style of dancing.

Not only is he an anesthesiology resident at Tufts Medical Center, but he's also a street performer.

Dr. Khera had been strutting his stuff out in public for years, but one day, "I was dancing and people threw me money," he recalls. And just like that, a busker was born.

With a boom box, a homemade sign, and a whole lot of gumption, he performs around the city of Boston twice a week, collecting money, but not for himself. He donates it all to charity through his organization, Doctor Be Dancing (#doctorbedancing).

"Animals that need rescuing, children who are living in poverty and need school supplies, terminally ill children, and meals for people who have chronic illnesses," he says, are his primary charities.

While his colleagues think he's eccentric, they are fully supportive.

"It's hard to argue with the charity aspect," says Dr. Khera. "Even if you think it's weird you go out and perform on the street, you can't really argue with doing it for charity."

People on the street can't argue either.

"There are all sorts of people who come and dance with me," he said. "Homeless people, kids, colleges, students, parents. Even if they don't drop anything in the bucket, you know in that moment you've inspired someone."

Dr. Khera says dancing on the street for strangers and taking care of patients in the hospital aren't all that different.

"Being a doctor is a lot about caring and a lot about comfort," says Dr. Khera. "You're basically ultimately trying to form a connection with another human being and make their life better."

Dr. Khera has raised $5,000 for charity in the past three months and hopes to raise $10,000 by October.
