Phantom Gourmet: Smackadoodles Packs Extra Flavor Into Cinnamon Bun Creations

Cinnamon rolls. Caramel Apple Cinnamon Rolls. Chocolate Peanut Butter Cinnamon Rolls. This is certainly no Cinnabon. This is Smackadoodles. Melody and Mike West have turned a home baking hobby into a fast-growing business based in East Taunton.

"A Smackadoodle is our version of a cinnamon roll - the way I believe it should be. Light, airy, full of flavor and not overly sweet," Melody describes.

"It's more than just a cinnamon roll. We took our original cinnamon rolls and we topped them with some of your favorite toppings: chocolate chip cookie dough, chocolate peanut butter cup, lemon raspberry, pina colada, just to name a few," adds Mike West. "Basically anything we can dream of, we put it on a cinnamon roll."

The basic Smackadoodle is just that, pretty basic. But once they stuff it, top it, frost it, and drizzle it, that's when your lips really start smacking. Case in point: the Caramel Apple Pie.

"Everyone loves apple pie. It's American right? I make a homemade apple pie filling, place it on top of our frosting and then I'll actually make a crumb topping," Mike said. "Take it home- warm it up and then put ice cream and whipped cream on top. You can't go wrong."

For a taste of summer, try the tangy and sweet Lemon Raspberry. For something a refreshingly tropical, dig into a Pina Cola. And for chocolate lovers, there are three truly decadent Smackadoodle varieties, staring with Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough.

"Every kid loves chocolate chip cookie dough, and that's a taste that you carry with you right into adult hood. So we took our cinnamon roll, we put cookie dough on top, and then we take Lindt chocolate and do a Lindt chocolate drizzle. They're sold," Mike West explains.

Another big seller is the Chocolate Peanut Butter Cup, featuring two great tastes that taste great together, especially on top of a cinnamon roll.

"We take our Smackadoodle and we put our homemade peanut butter frosting, and it's just like the Reese's peanut butter cups because they add salt to theirs so we add just a little bit of salt to our peanut butter frosting, and then use the chocolate drizzle on top," Melody says.

"It's got a peanut butter frosting. It's got a Reese's peanut cup and chocolate," Mike explains. "Need I say more?"

Out of all the Smackadoodles Melody bakes by hand, nothing satisfies quite like the S'mores.

"We put graham cracker on top. It's got a marshmallow frosting. It's got chocolate drizzled on top, and then we take more marshmallows and put them on top, and then we'll actually torch the marshmallows so they're nice and caramelized," says Mike.

"When you take our Smackadoodle and warm it up, it becomes a S'more. It's ooey and gooey," Melody adds.

"It's as if they're sitting at that camp fire and - you know that face that people make when you have a s'more - it's just that, 'Aahhh.' That's the face we get," is how Mike explains the treat.

Other Smackadoodles get quite a different reaction from customers, from jaw-dropping to dumbfounded, because believe it or not, they also offer a full savory line as well. They're sort of like a combination of a cinnamon bun and a calzone. There's Buffalo Chicken with blue cream cheese frosting, a Portuguese inspired Linguica Burger, Tomato and Feta, Philly Cheesesteak, and even Reuben Sandwich Smackadoodle.

"Reuben is corned beef, Swiss cheese, sauerkraut, Russian dressing, and then we top it with a dill pickle. It's just like eating a Reuben sandwich," Mike describes.

So whether you're interested in something savory, sweet, or truly sinful, remember the word Smackadoodle. After all, it's tough to forget, and impossible to resist.

"I love when we're at the farmers markets and people will buy them to have later, and then I'll look over and they're already starting to eat it," says Melody. And they'll look over at me like, 'Oh, I did something bad. I shouldn't be having it now,' but then they'll come back for a second and they're like, 'These are so good!'"

You can find Smackadoodles at farmer's markets throughout southeastern Massachusetts, or order online at smackadoodles.com.
