Off-Duty State Police Trooper Allegedly Assaults Woman

ROYALSTON (CBS) -- An off-duty State Police Trooper allegedly assaulted a woman early Sunday morning.

Troopers were called to the 36-year-old trooper's home in Roylaston shortly after 3 a.m. on a report of a domestic assault and battery.

He was taken into custody, booked, and immediately relieved of duty pending an upcoming duty status hearing early this week, police say.

The woman was taken to Heywood Hospital in Gardner.

She suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

The trooper has not been identified because state law prohibits the release of names of people charged with domestic violence under certain circumstances.

He is a member of the Division of Field Services and is stationed in Troop C, which oversees central Massachusetts.

State Police took the trooper's service weapons and ammunition, cruiser, State Police identification, and other job-related equipment.

Several privately-owned weapons and ammunition were also removed from his home by police.

His license to carry a firearm will be suspended indefinitely.

The trooper is being held on $25,000 cash bail at the Millbury Barracks.

He is slated for arraignment at Gardner District Court on Monday.
