Driver Who Allegedly Struck, Killed Seekonk Asst. Town Clerk Charged

SEEKONK (CBS) -- Authorities say a 24-year-old Attleboro man has been charged in the hit-and-run death of a Seekonk town employee in late January.

Jacob LaCourse was arrested by Seekonk police and State Police on Friday night at his apartment, according to a statement released Sunday from the Bristol County District Attorney's Office.

LaCourse was charged with leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident resulting in death and negligent operation of a vehicle.

On Jan. 30 around 10 p.m., Seekonk police and firefighters were called to Arcade Avenue following a report of an injured pedestrian.

First responders quickly learned that the woman, later identified as Seekonk Assistant Town Clerk Karen McHugh, had been struck by a vehicle that left the scene.

She was taken to Rhode Island Hospital where she was pronounced dead that same evening.

After several months investigating the incident, authorities were able to determine it was LaCourse who allegedly fled the scene.

Prior to his arrest, LaCourse had been free on bail on a pending Superior Court case, investigators say.

He is currently being held on $500,000 cash bail until his arraignment in Taunton District Court on Monday.
