Bruins Sign Defenseman Matt Irwin

BOSTON (CBS) -- The Boston Bruins have signed defenseman Matt Irwin.

It's a one-year deal with a cap hit of $800,000, general manager Don Sweeney announced on Friday.

Irwin, 27, stands at 6-foot-2 and 210-pounds, and gives Boston some added depth on their blue line. He skated in 53 games for the San Jose Sharks in 2014-15, registering eight goals and 11 assists for 19 points with a plus-three rating.

In three seasons with San Jose, Irwin racked up 16 goals and 34 assists with 63 penalty minutes in 153 games. He's played in 13 playoff games, 11 games in the 2013 playoffs and two games in the 2014 playoffs, chipping in with one goal and one assist.

Irwin had some local ties before making it to the NHL. He played four seasons (2009-13) with the Worcester Sharks, posting 22 goals and 66 assists in 181 AHL games. Before becoming a pro he played at UMass Amherst for two seasons (2008-10), appearing in 67 collegiate contests and recording 14 goals and 28 assists.
