Boston Plans To Make City Hall Plaza More Inviting

BOSTON (CBS) - The Mayor's office is working to make City Hall more welcoming -- with a few hundred dollars and creative thinking.

"People like to be there, it's just a matter of moving the brick a little bit and doing some other things out there," said Mayor Marty Walsh.

Recently, colorful, plastic Adirondack chairs were added to the brick pavers. Next week, crews will lay down a 40 x 40 patch of AstroTurf grass.

"People are going to be able to play soccer on there, a little bit of catch on there, a little bit of sports on there, some other games. Just trying to liven up City Hall Plaza," said Walsh.

"If that stuff was here, I'd come down and hang out," said Andrew Simon.

"Yeah, it seems pretty interesting. I think it will be cool. I'll check it out for sure," said Jack O'Brien.

"I think it would be really good for the kids to get maybe more involved in the city -- maybe even learn more about City Hall Plaza while having some fun," said Linden Pearsall.

The city has hosted food trucks and events on the plaza before, including Boston Calling, Big Apple Circus, and most recently, viewing parties for the Women's World Cup.

Mayor Walsh says his office is currently assessing City Hall and any long range plans to make it more attractive.

For now, cornhole will do.
