Boy Loses Hand In Fireworks Accident In Dorchester
BOSTON (CBS) -- A fireworks accident severely injured two 9-year-old boys from Dorchester.
One of them lost a hand.
His family identified him as Raciel Carubuccia.
Rosa Ortiz, Carubuccia's sister, said after the accident he ran to the family's apartment.
"It took off my brother's hand. I was crying and nervous and he kept on saying he was going to die," she said.
They say he had the first surgery on his hand Sunday night.
"He's strong. He's talking. He knows his hand is really, really bad," says Brismely Guzman, his mother's cousin.
The other boy ended up with serious wounds on his face.
Investigators say the children found a leftover firework and ignited it at the corner of Howard Avenue and Woodcliff Street at noon on Sunday.
Raciel's next surgery is scheduled for Friday. He is expected to be in the hospital for weeks, possibly months.
Kesina Gray lives next to the accident scene.
"It was boom. A big noise and you heard a little kid screaming and you knew he was hurt. I seen a little boy running across the street with a look of horror and I called 911," she said.
Boston Police Superintendent-in-Chief William Gross said officers looked throughout the neighborhood for any more unlit fireworks. He urged people to do the same.
"Just take a look around your home and the street for any fireworks," he said.
Fireworks caused serious injury and death across New England on the Fourth Of July weekend.
On Saturday, police said a man in Maine died after trying to launch a firework off his head.
In Saugus, a man was seriously hurt after a firework he was trying to light exploded in his hand.
