Despite Close Call, Rain Likely Holds Off For 4th Of July Fireworks

BOSTON (CBS) – It just wouldn't be the 4th of July in New England without a weather scare or two.

You may have detected a nervous weather forecaster or two in the past 24 hours?  That is because the weather models that we rely upon to make our forecasts briefly took a left hand turn, literally.

We have been watching a weather boundary which is stalled out to our south for many days. A wave of low pressure is going to ride along this boundary and pass about 50-100 miles south of the Islands on Saturday.

Turns out those 50-100 miles will be extremely important in ensuring a dry day for those planning on celebrating the 4th of July.

Model runs last night were hinting that the low center would come much closer to our coast, perhaps even ride right along it. Now it appears we may have a little breathing room.

So, let's get down to the nitty gritty.

Saturday Morning

Clouds overspread the area during the morning hours. Some light showers may creep up along the South Coast by late morning.  Temperatures 55-60 early, rising to 68-72 by Midday.

Saturday Afternoon

Mainly cloudy but dry over most of the area. Best chance of seeing some light rain would be in Western Massachusetts (the Berkshires) and over extreme southeastern Mass. including Cape Cod and the Islands.

Worst case scenario, the rain shield reaches just about as far north as the Mass Pike, but it would be very light and not long lasting. Temperatures generally 70-75 degrees, though a bit cooler over the Cape and Islands, 65-70 degrees.

Saturday Evening/Night

Mainly cloudy early on, but there should be some thinning of the clouds from west to east around sunset and beyond.

Most importantly, it looks dry for all of New England for fireworks!  Temperatures will drop back into the 60s and by 9-11 p.m. into the lower 60s.

Sunday still looks like a terrific beach day with temperatures rising well into the 80s!
