Celtics Draft Shooting Guard R.J. Hunter 28th Overall
BOSTON (CBS) -- After drafting a defensive-minded guard with their first pick of the night, the Celtics went for an offensive-minded guard with their second first-round selection in the 2015 NBA Draft.
Boston drafted Georgia State shooting guard R.J. Hunter with the 28th overall pick, adding another body to an already cramped group of guards on the Celtics roster.
Hunter made a name for himself with his deadly shooting at Georgia State, and showed it off on the national stage in the NCAA Tournament, draining a clutch three-pointer with seconds remaining to give the Panthers a second-round win over three-seeded Baylor.
The 6-foot-6, 185-pound guard averaged 18.4 points per game over his three years in college, averaging 19.7 points as a junior. Hunter left Georgia State as the school's all-time leading scorer.
Hunter shot just 31 percent from downtown his final year in school, but shot 42 percent from the floor and 35 percent from three-point range over his collegiate career. He's said to be one of the best pure shooters in the draft, and may even top that list, but one of the knocks on Hunter is he has trouble creating his own shot.
The Celtics drafted point guard Terry Rozier with the 16th overall pick, giving them quite the collection of guards. The two new draft picks will join Isaiah Thomas, Marcus Smart, Avery Bradley and James Young on Boston's depth chart.
Boston took Hunter with the pick they received from the Los Angeles Clippers as compensation for head coach Doc Rivers.
The Celtics also own the 33rd and 45th overall picks in the second round.
