Randolph Elementary School Staff Member On Leave For Allegedly Assaulting Student

RANDOLPH (CBS) --  A Randolph elementary school staff member is on leave for allegedly physically assaulting a student, administrators say.

"Recently, allegations of misconduct by a staff member, of an alleged physical assault on a student, were brought to the John F. Kennedy School's administration's attention," Randolph Superintendent Thomas Anderson said in a statement.

Anderson said the district immediately contacted police, who are still investigating.

Police say Andrea Cornelius was arrested Tuesday morning and charged with assault and battery in connection with the incident. She is on paid administrative leave as the investigation continues.

"We are working with the RPD and the school to ensure that the allegation is being thoroughly investigated, and that the student is receiving the support needed," Anderson said. "Randolph Public Schools takes the safety of our students very seriously."

No further details about the incident were released.
