State Police Investigating Fatal Crash Involving Wheelbarrow In Oxford

OXFORD (CBS) - Massachusetts State Police are investigating a fatal crash involving a wheelbarrow on Saturday afternoon in Oxford.

The crash occurred north of Exit 5 of Route 395 southbound around 1 p.m.

Officers found a vehicle that had been involved a rollover accident.

Police say a woman was traveling on Route 395 south when she saw the wheelbarrow in the left travel lane.  She was able to drive around the wheelbarrow to the left into the median to avoid a collision.

However,  a 32-year-old man driving behind the woman in a 2002 Oldsmobile Bravado was killed trying to avoid the wheelbarrow that dropped from a moving vehicle. He was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene, police say.

He was the only person in the vehicle at the time of the accident.

The man's identity won't be released until his family is notified.

Investigators are looking for the driver who dropped the wheelbarrow, which was recovered by officers.

Traffic was backed up for hours. Officers cleared the scene shortly before 5 p.m.

Auburn fire and EMS, Auburn police and Mass Highway assisted at the scene.
