Phantom Gourmet: Guacamole Taste Test

BOSTON (CBS) -- Phantom recently purchased four packages of guacamole at a local supermarket. The creamy contenders were Calavo, Sabra, Wholly Guacamole, and Yucatan. See if you can guess which smooth snack ended up at the top of the food chain.

Yucatan guacamole ended up in last place. The label says this stuff is 95 percent avocado, but Phantom thinks it's 100 percent gross. It's a flavor explosion at first taste, unfortunately, it wasn't a flavor Phantom was very fond of. This stuff is just too tangy, too acidic, and way too spicy. Combine that with an unsatisfyingly light whipped texture, and you've got one seriously disappointing dip.

Next up is Sabra. This brand is mostly known for their hummus, and Phantom thinks they might be better off sticking with what they know best.

This colorful guac is amped up with pieces of red tomato and bright green specs of cilantro, which impart a zippy flavor. But there's actually too much going on here, with all those other ingredients overshadowing the avocado.

The runner up is Wholly Guacamole. With fun packaging suggesting all kinds of uses, and boasting its status as 'America's number one guacamole,' this had been Phantom's go-to guac. It's delightfully creamy, with small pieces of onion that add a pleasant texture contrast. On the downside, it's a bit too salty, a bit too garlicky, and delivers more fat and calories than any of the other competitors.

At the top of the food chain is Calavo. This big 12-ounce tray has everything Phantom is looking for in a guacamole. It's luxuriously smooth, but studded with big pieces of ripe avocado. Rather than the usual lime juice, this stuff is made with tomatillo, imparting a uniquely authentic taste.

There's just the right amount of spices, which augment, rather than overtake the avocado, leading to a sublime snacking experience. That's why Calavo guacamole is at the top of the food chain.
