Trek Recalls Nearly 1 Million Bicycles For Lever Problem

WATERLOO, Wis. (CBS) -- A popular bicycle maker is recalling nearly 1 million bikes for a problem that could seriously injure riders.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission says a problem with front disc brakes affects about 900,000 Trek bicycles in the United States, and 98,000 in Canada.

CPSC Recall Information

"An open quick release lever on the bicycle's front wheel hub can come into contact with the front disc brake assembly, causing the front wheel to come to a sudden stop or separate from the bicycle," the agency says.

So far, Trek has reported three incidents involving the recalled equipment. One resulted in quadriplegia, another in facial injuries and a third in a fractured wrist.

"Consumers should stop using the bicycles immediately and contact an authorized Trek retailer for free installation of a new quick release on the front wheel," the agency says.

Trek says any bike with disc brakes and a front quick release lever that can open beyond 180 degrees and contact the disc brake assembly is affected.

The bicycle maker is offering anyone who participates in the recall a $20 coupon toward Bontrager merchandise.
