Phantom Gourmet: Sea Salt Popcorn Taste Test

BOSTON (CBS) -- Phantom recently purchased four bags of light sea salt popcorn at a local supermarket. The guilt-free contenders were Boom Chicka Pop, Cape Cod, Popcorn Indiana Fit, and Smartfood Delight. See if you can guess which salty snack ended up at the top of the food chain.

Boom Chicka Pop finished in last place. Phantom had high hopes for this bright yellow bag with the crazy name, but after eating just a few pieces of Boom Chicka Pop, he just wanted to Boom Chicka stop. While certainly not terrible, this brand was a bit lacking when it came to flavor, plus it had a slightly unpleasant aftertaste. In the end, this might make for better packing material than snacking material.

A step up from there is Popcorn Indiana Fit. Don't let the farm equipment on the bag fool you, this company is actually headquartered in New Jersey. But that doesn't mean they don't make a decent bag of popcorn. These slightly smaller, denser pieces deliver more crunch than the others, providing a pleasantly hearty handful.

The runner up is Cape Cod. This local company makes some of Phantom's favorite potato chips, and he's happy to report they make some pretty decent popcorn too. Believe it or not, this bag actually smells a lot like an order of Mcdonald's french fries, and it's almost as addictive. This popcorn offers up excellent sea salt flavor, and a solid snacking experience, but overall it just didn't bag the top spot.

At the top of the food chain is Smartfood Delight. Simply put, this stuff is sensational. This big bag is stuffed with plump light fluffy pieces of absolutely addictive popcorn. It's satisfyingly salty, and a little bit buttery, with just a hint of sweetness, delivering everything Phantom was looking for. That's why Smartfood Delight sea salt popcorn is at the top of the food chain.
