Red Sox Concerned Koji Uehara Won't Be Ready For Opening Day

BOSTON (CBS) -- There is growing concern among the Boston Red Sox that closer Koji Uehara will not be ready for opening day.

The 40-year-old Uehara hurt his hamstring during Spring Training workouts and he has not pitched since March 14. He threw just three innings this spring before going down with the injury, and the team is hoping Uehara will throw off flat ground and complete a bullpen session before the weekend.

But manager John Farrell doesn't sound all too optimistic that Uehara will be good to go for April 6 in Philadelphia.

"I think, with each passing day that he's not in a game, there's growing concern -- concern in the sense, 'Will he be ready for April 6?' We're just working through that," Farrell told reporters on Tuesday, adding there is no timetable for Uehara to appear in games.

Uehara has notched 47 saves for the Red Sox over the last two years, earning an All-Star nod last season. If he isn't able to start the year, Edward Mujica is the likely candidate to close games for the Red Sox.
