Keolis Putting 15 Commuter Rail Trains Back Into Service Monday

BOSTON (CBS) – Officials for the company that operates the Commuter Rail say that more than a dozen trains will be put back in service on Monday as a part of plan to restore full service by month's end.

Commuter Rail trains have been slowed significantly throughout the winter due to snow, ice, and frigid temperatures.

But Keolis Commuter Services announced on Friday that 15 trains will resume operation starting Monday. The group's plan is for all trains to be running as scheduled by March 30.

Keolis officials said that 90 percent of trains arrived within 15 minutes of their scheduled arrival time during Friday's rush hour.

The Fitchburg line will return to full morning peak service on Monday. In addition, trains will be added to the Haverhill, Franklin, Fairmount, Old Colony and Providence/Stoughton lines.

Keolis Commuter Services General Manager Gerald Francis said crews are working "around the clock" to reach full service.

"The weather took a heavy toll on the train equipment, and it will take time to repair the locomotives and safely return them to service," Francis said. "Our focus is restoring service to locations that will help relieve some of the greatest bottlenecks in the overall system and where the infrastructure enables us to provide a consistent level of service."
