Boston University's Cedric Hankerson And Cheddi Mosely Named To All-Patriot League Team

By Greg Hunt

The Patriot League announced its 2014-15 all-conference team for men's basketball Monday afternoon and two Boston University players were on it: Sophomore guard Cedric Hankerson, who was named to the second team, and freshman guard Cheddi Mosely, who was named to the rookie team.

The players were key members of a Terriers team that finished tied for fourth place in the Patriot League with a 9-9 record. It was the 15th consecutive season that BU has finished conference play with a winning percentage of .500 or better, which is tied for the 12th-longest such streak in the nation.

Hankerson, who was named to the all-rookie team last season, was moved into the starting lineup by head coach Joe Jones this season and Hankerson responded by averaging 15.9 points, 4.6 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 1.8 steals per game. He was the only player on the All-Patriot League team to rank in the top 20 in the conference in all four of those statistical categories. Hankerson scored 20 or more points on eight occasions, including 24 points in a November road game against the No. 1 ranked Kentucky Wildcats. He also made a school-record nine steals in a game last month against the American Eagles.

Mosely became the third Terrier in a row to earn a spot on the all-rookie team, following Hankerson last year, and now-junior guard John Papale the previous year when the Terriers still competed in the America East Conference. Mosley was ranked as the state's seventh-best basketball prospect coming out of high school last year, and this season he started 24 of 28 games for the Terriers. He averaged 8.6 points per game while shooting 43.7 percent from the field (87-for-199), including 40.9 percent from the three-point line (52-for-127).

In BU's regular-season finale, a 77-70 loss to Holy Cross at Agganis Arena Saturday afternoon, Hankerson and Mosley combined for 29 points, five rebounds, four assists and two steals.

Hankerson, Mosely and the rest of the BU team will now prepare for the Patriot League tournament, which begins Thursday when the Terriers travel to Lafayette (Pa.) for a quarterfinal match-up. BU and Lafayette finished the regular season tied for 4th place, but an 84-74 win in overtime against No. 1-seeded Bucknell gave Lafayette the tiebreaker for the No. 4 seed and a home game. The Terriers split the regular season series with Lafayette, losing 63-62 at Agganis Arena on January 10, but winning 74-60 at Kirby Sports Center February 9. As a No. 5 seed, BU will try to become the lowest seed in school and Patriot League history to win the post-season tournament and advance to the NCAA Tournament.
