Phantom Gourmet: Great 8 Steak & Cheese

Nothing makes Phantom smile like sizzling steak stuffed into a sub roll and slathered with cheese. These are the 8 Greatest steak and cheeses Phantom has ever found.

Bob's
Medford

Kicking off the Great 8 is Bob's in Medford. For more than seventy years, Bob's has been a one stop shop for incredible Italian eats served big, fast and affordable. This place is part specialty store and part deli, and their mouthwatering steak and cheese sub can satisfy appetites that are big, or even bigger.

Ciro's
Woonsocket, RI

Ciro's in Woonsocket, Rhode Island is an authentic English tavern that serves creative takes of pub fare like Pulled Pork Nachos topped with purple slaw. The must order on the menu is the Signature Steak Sandwich. Far from your typical shaved steak sub, this bad boy has the reputation for being one of the greatest grinders around.

"It's a thick cut of sirloin, smothered with American cheese, mushrooms and onions. So you're getting an actual piece of sirloin - like a full steak."

Virgilio's
Gloucester

Another Great 8 winner is Virgilio's in Gloucester. Since 1934, this classic Italian bakery has been serving top notch sandwiches on hot bread that's baked fresh every hour. The steak and cheese here stands out for the bread of course, but also because they use a thin cut steak cutlet that's coated in bread crumbs and fried until crispy.

"You get like 5,6,7 cutlets in your sandwich. We put salami, sautéed peppers and onions, provolone cheese and we melt it all together."

The Copper House Tavern
Waltham

The Copper House Tavern in Waltham is a big, attractive space with a fun, active bar at the center of it all. Here they serve all of your bar food favorites like Hot Honey Wings and pizzas packed with all of the good stuff. But the perfect snack to pair with one of their 40 craft beers has to be their piping hot Steak and Cheese Egg Rolls, loaded up with sirloin, provolone, peppers and onions inside a crispy, golden shell.

The Tides Restaurant
Nahant

The Tides Restaurant on Nahant Beach is the perfect seaside spot for sucking back some cold ones with some hot, hearty food. While prime rib is the ultimate meal for any meat lover, it's best when smothered in cheese and served on a hot crusty roll.

"It's shaved prime rib, sautéed peppers, onions, mushrooms, whatever you like, with your choice of cheese all cooked on the grill and loaded into a French roll."

Driftwood Publick House
Plymouth

Another Great 8 winner is the Driftwood Publick House in Plymouth. This cozy pub is where locals come for craft beers, a hip vibe, and the unforgettable Philly Cheesesteak Stuffed Pretzel. This fresh baked pretzel, loaded with juicy beef and melted cheese, weighs in at well over a pound. Customers are in awe of the enormous size, and incredible taste.

EVO
Worcester

EVO in Worcester is a swanky, sleek eatery with big leather booths, stone columns, and bubbles bouncing behind the bar. The eclectic menu is lined with foods from across the globe, like their Asian style steak and Cheese sandwich. Fresh out of the Far East, this spin on the classic sub is made with tender shaved steak smothered in a Thai chili teriyaki sauce and served up with a pile of classic crinkle cut fries.

Carl's Steak Subs
Waltham

Rounding out the Great 8 is Carl's Steak Subs in Waltham and their sister restaurants, TC Lando's, where they serve larger-than-life, one pound steak sandwiches in crazy creative forms. The Cherry Bomb mixes steak and provolone with hot peppers and barbecue sauce, while the Kama-Kazi explodes with pepperoni, ham, and bacon.
