Red Sox, John Farrell Agree To Contract Extension

FORT MYERS, Fla. (CBS) – The Boston Red Sox and manager John Farrell have agreed to a contract extension, the team announced.

General Manager Ben Cherington made the announcement on Saturday as pitchers and catchers were on the field in Fort Myers for their first official workout of the 2015 season.

Farrell's new contract will last through the 2017 season with a club option for the 2018 campaign. Financial terms were not disclosed.

"It means a lot to be working for the Red Sox," Farrell told WBZ-TV's Dan Roche on Saturday. "To have this taken care of at this point of time in the year is certainly satisfying, but it doesn't change what we need to deliver on. That's to win on the field."

The Red Sox won the 2013 World Series in Farrell's first season with the team. He was named the American League Manager of the Year that season.

But last year the team struggled, finishing last in the American League East.

In four seasons as manager of the Toronto Blue Jays and Red Sox, Farrell has a combined career record of 322-326.

The Red Sox acquired Farrell via trade with Toronto in October 2012 when they traded shortstop Mike Aviles to the Blue Jays in exchange for the manager.
