Firefighters Battle 3-Alarm House Fire In Needham

NEEDHAM (CBS) - Several firefighter crews battled a three-alarm fire that broke out at a Needham home Saturday night.

The fire started sometime before 8 p.m. at 109 Meadowbrook Road.

Flames appeared to be concentrated to the roof, and dense smoke emanated from the home.

Multiple engines lined the street while firefighters worked to extinguish the fire.

Mike Culgin was walking his dog in the area when he came upon the blaze.

He alerted the elderly couple that lives at the home.

"I saw the flames coming out of the attic window," he said. "I dropped the leash, ran up to the door, knocked on (it, and the) couple was home having dinner and I told them they had to get out of the house.

"They were already on the phone with 911."

WBZ-TV's Jim Smith reports that at several different points a fire engine sounded a horn, signaling every firefighter to get out of the building for fear of collapse.

No firefighters appeared to be hurt, Smith added.

Neighbors say the couple was unharmed but were shook up by the fact that they lost their longtime home.

"It's terrible," said neighbor Len Samprucci. "Particularly to watch your house being destroyed.

"They've lived here longer than we have and we've been here for 35 years."

Crews are still on scene and are expected to be at the site all night to tend to hot spots.

The cause of the blaze is currently unknown.

No additional information was immediately available.
