Mass. National Guard Members Activated For Snow Removal Efforts

BOSTON (AP) — About 500 members of the Massachusetts National Guard are being activated to help deal with the aftermath of record-setting snowfall over the past two weeks.

A spokesman for the state Emergency Management Agency said Tuesday that about of them will use heavy equipment to help remove and dispose of snow, while the other half will help shovel out fire hydrants and other tasks.

Those being called up are from transportation and engineering units.

Exactly where they will be deployed is yet to be determined, and depends heavily on which communities request the help.

Gov. Charlie Baker on Monday declared a state of emergency after the latest storm dropped more than two feet of snow on some areas of the state.
