Blizzard Baby: Mom In Labor Gets Lift From Troopers

SHIRLEY (CBS) -- Plow drivers and Massachusetts State Police helped ensure a special delivery during the Blizzard of 2015 for a mother in need.

It was 4:30 a.m. on Tuesday – the height of the storm – when Megan Filetti of Shirley started having contractions that were seven minutes apart. Her doctor told Filetti and her husband Sal that they needed to get to their hospital in Leominster quickly.

"Everyone plans for the birth of their child, however, a blizzard with a record breaking snowfall was not in the birth plan," Megan Filetti said in a statement.

Sal Filetti called Shirley police and within 10 minutes, a Shirley Fire Department plow truck was in front of their home to clear the way. But as they were pulling off the highway, their car got stuck in the snow.

"My husband calmly called 911 to tell the state police that we needed help," said Megan Filetti, whose contractions were three minutes apart by then. "Within 5 minutes, Massachusetts State Police Trooper Gregory Jones, along with several other troopers, got me safely and promptly into the back of the police SUV and drove to the hospital."

Other troopers stayed with her husband and helped them shovel out their car so he could be at the hospital too, the family said.

A few hours later, Rocco Salvatore Filetti was born. Rocco weighed in at 8 pounds, 8 ounces and measured 22 inches long. He joins sister Erin and brother Patrick.

"We are truly thankful for all of the help we received from the Shirley Fire Department, the Massachusetts State Police and HealthAlliance Hospital," Megan Filetti said. "My husband and I are excited to share this story with baby Rocco when he gets older."
