Daily Talker: Tunnel Trouble

Traffic jams are a way of life for every commuter in the Boston area, and since it opened in 2003, the Tip O'Neill Tunnel has been a headache for many drivers. It is not uncommon for people to be driving too fast or too close to the car in front of them in the O'Neill Tunnel. That appears to be what happened Wednesday morning when 15 cars were involved in a pileup that left 2 people hurt. Drivers are also known to make split-second decisions about which lane to be in. Our Jon Keller found there were 22 times more accidents in the O'Neill tunnel than in the Callahan and Sumner tunnels combined since 2003. MassDOT secretary Frank DePaola told WBZ the state is considering rumble strips to warn drivers and said new LED lighting is on the way. But DePaola stopped short of calling for a lower speed limit (currently 45 mph in the tunnel) out of fears that would create the sort of backups the massive Big Dig project was supposed to eliminate in the first place. What do you think should be done to improve safety in the O'Neill Tunnel?
