Waltham Reminds Drivers To 'Use Yah Blinkah'
WALTHAM (CBS) -- A local town is reminding people to "use yah blinkah" as it steps up enforcement against drivers who fail to utilize their turn signals.
Waltham police say that over the next year they'll be cracking down on offending drivers for safety reasons. They cite a study by the Society of Automotive Engineers that found people who didn't use their turn signals cause more accidents than distracted drivers texting or talking on the phone.
"Failing to use a turn signal may seem like a simple oversight with little impact," Waltham police said. "But findings went on to show that failure to use turn signals actually causes 2 million motor vehicle accidents each year."
In May, state highway officials decided to have fun with commuters to promote turn signals. Highway signs around Boston incorporated the local vernacular into their safe driving message.
The first page of the signs read, "Changing Lanes?"
They were followed by, "Use Yah Blinkah"
Nearly 5,000 people were cited in 2014 for failing to use a turn signal.
